So inspired...especially in my 50’s now; and all I ever wanted to be, was a writer. This was in my inbox today as I’ve been working all year on a memoir and feeling like giving up. Thank you!!
Thank you for this great addition to this great series. I feel really moved by Nana-Ama’s interview and journey. Will definitely catch up with her memoir, the title alone is so beautiful. Right up there with Wild.:) Thanks again.
What a great interview! I love the reminder to go with the flow. I wrote a piece last year about what depression feels like, and I likened it to feeling adrift, floating where the water takes me:
I’ll add Nana-Ama’s memoir to my reading list, as I’m interested in learning more about how race, class, and gender impact mental health conditions. Thank you both for sharing!
I love Nana-Ama Danquah. Her book “Willow Weep For Me” explained more about living with depression than any psychology I had in college. I was always curious about how it was from the inside of someone experiencing depression. My Dad was Bi-Polar and he was hospitalized for depression 3 times starting when I was 7 years old. The book is inspiring in so many ways. Nana-Ama is a talented writer, and all around great person.
Thanks so much for this fantastic interview/article. I will go and look for her memoir. And the photo is so beautiful. Love the description of the swimming instructor.
I am inspired to read the book. The Title beckons!
My mum was bipolar or as it was known in the ‘old days,’“Manic Depressive”. Her life was full of tragedy. Depression is HARD. Fortunately it didn’t show up when we were young children, so we had a good childhood. She went through the Change of life at 50 and that seems to have started it. She was in and out of hospital until she passed at age 77. As such, Suicide was an open topic in my adult life. So when my younger son tragically took his last breath almost 3 and half years ago at age 49, I was devastated. The pain of losing a child is indescribable.
My daughter has written a small book about her brother called “NARRATING THE SEASONS OF GRIEF”. There was also an episode on TV talking about it. Her words ‘say it all. She has a gift.
Thank you so, so much for sharing. My daughter is a great writer and always recommending authors she can relate to. Now it’s my turn to recommend a book for her, to put on her, ‘waiting to read list’.
I will be 74 this year, and I have learned so, so much in these last few years. I, like most people, get ‘down’ on occasion. BUT REMEMBER every day is precious and “GO WITH FLOW’ is fantastic advice . God bless!
What an incredible, inspirational woman. The quote about power resonated deeply with me. Thank you Cheryl for sharing Nana-Ama's fascinating meandering path of self discovery.
Cheryl! Thank you for sharing Nama-Ama, whose book I will most certainly be reading. As someone in the process of facing the fear of choosing a writing career (after decades of editing and writing for hire), I am particularly inspire by her second leap. Thank you to you both. ♥️
Thank you. Great quote. I think I'm echoing something you said in this interview, but I'm feeling energized and driven in a way I haven't felt in ages. :)
I love this, Cheryl. I am running to buy Nana-AMA’s memoir! Inspiring! Xo
😍
Loved reading this, Cheryl! And inspired by Nana-Ama’s story. Remembering to “go with the flow” is a perfect reminder.
It is! I love that too.

How familiar I am with that feeling. But if it’s something that’s in your heart to do, press forward through the doubt.
You have just filled my heart❤️
Thank you so much for sharing this. I am in my midlife now and making music. Loud music. :)
LOVE this interview, my goodness. I can't wait to read Willow Weep for Me.
Thank you Cheryl. This spoke to me on so many levels. I’m off to buy Nana-Ama’s book. ✨
