Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a paid subscription and a free subscription?

What you get with a paid subscription is my Dear Sugar Letter once a month, access to the full Dear Sugar archives, occasional bonus content, all free newsletters (which I publish 4-6 times a year), the ability to comment on all posts, and my eternal gratitude.

What you get if you subscribe to my free newsletter is a letter from me 4-6 times a year, which includes my musings, sometimes a Dear Sugar letter from the archives, and various announcements about upcoming events and such. You can also comment on all free posts.

Either way, thank you for signing up! I’m so glad you’re here.

Does Substack pay you to write this newsletter?

Nope. I don’t have a Substack Pro Deal. I started this newsletter on my own and the money I get for it comes from paying subscribers. Thank you.

I’d like to submit a letter for Dear Sugar to answer. Where do I send it?

Please email it to me at: deardearsugar@gmail.com (yes, that is two dears!).

I love hearing from you and pondering your questions, even if I can’t answer all of them in my column. Please note, I’m unable to respond to requests for advice directly/privately—I only give advice in the Dear Sugar Letters.

When is the Dear Sugar Letter published?

Once a month, on the last day of the month. You’ll get it in your inbox, but you can also read it on the app or website (so long as you’re a paid subscriber).

I subscribed, but I’m not getting any email from you. Help!

Please check your spam folder and add me as a contact so you get it in your inbox. You can also access all posts on my Substack home page or on the Substack App. If you’re a paid subscriber you’ll be able to view every post I’ve ever published; if you’re a free subscriber, you’ll be able to view every free post I’ve ever published.

I want to change my email, change my payment method, unsubscribe, or in some other way manage my Substack account. How do I do that?

Go to this helpful page, where you will find answers to all of these questions about account management and more. If you still have questions after visiting that page, there are even more answers about using Substack here.

Where can I get the Substack App?

Right here: Substack App. I highly recommend the app! As a subscriber to many Substack newsletters myself, I’ve found it makes reading much easier—plus all the posts are in one place, rather than somewhere in my crazy inbox. Well done, Substack.

Where can I find a listing of your appearances, workshops and events?

By checking my web site periodically and/or following me on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook. I also try to include information about upcoming events in my free newsletter.
